A Global Vision
At Philanthropy Coach, we envision a world of
increasingly effective philanthropists, motivated and supported by a
creative, competent network of professional advisors. These advisors will
bridge the gap between their clients' complex charitable interests and the
many giving options in the philanthropic community.
To fulfill this
vision and meet the needs of these advisors, we have crafted a unique
program that will train you to serve as a philanthropic coach to your
clients and prospective clients.

Jay Steenhuysen
Philanthropy Coach's curriculum is based on the expertise of philanthropic
planner Jay Steenhuysen, whose work with high net worth families during the
last twenty years has made him a leading resource in this field. In
February 2004, Worth magazine cited Jay, along with Goldman Sachs
and Bessemer Trust, as one of three primary resources for high net worth
families seeking assistance with philanthropy.
Prior to establishing his own consulting firm, Jay served as Managing
Director of Philanthropy Services at myCFO, a financial services firm whose
300+ clients had an average net worth of $125 million. In addition to
eighty-two private foundations established by those clients, myCFO managed
supporting organizations and operating foundations, as well as charitable
remainder trusts for virtually every single client. To these clients, Jay
provided philanthropic advice, and in addition, built the myCFO Foundation
(a donor advised fund) to over $45 million in less than a year.
Jay’s ability to bridge the financial and philanthropic worlds is
rooted in fifteen years of experience in charitable organizations. At Brown University, where he worked
exclusively with donors who could give $5 million or more, he provided
technical and philanthropic planning support to the Principal Gifts team
and its donors. At the international relief and development organization,
World Vision, he served in a variety of roles, including private giving
counsel, director of gift planning, and capital campaign director.
Patricia Tolbert
A fifteen-year
veteran of the world’s largest conservation organization, former
Nature Conservancy gift planner Trish Tolbert served as a strategic
consultant for the organization’s corps of 300+ fundraisers
stewarding over 2,000 major donor relationships. A fellowship recipient of
the Conservancy’s Asia-Pacific program in 2003, Trish has worked with
state programs in every region of the country and with partner
organizations in Australia
and Canada.
Since her early days in retail merchandising, Trish has pioneered
innovative teaching and training methods for both large and small
organizations. Trish’s leadership in strategic planning, change and
project management, coaching, and meeting facilitation have been recognized
across private, nonprofit, and governmental sectors. From 2003-2005, she
co-led the introduction of storytelling as a donor communications tool to
the Conservancy and collaborated with Jay on an organization-wide training
program that changed the way many major gift fundraisers approached high
net worth donors.
